Brief Description
- Sabine Pass currently has six fully operational liquefaction units — or “trains” — each capable of producing ~5 mtpa of LNG.
- The sixth train began production in 2021.
- It has five storage tanks and two berths (capable of receiving the world’s largest LNG carrier)
- The SPL Expansion Project is being designed to include up to three large-scale liquefaction trains, each with a production capacity of approximately 6.5 mtpa of LNG, a boil-off-gas (“BOG”) re-liquefaction unit with an approximate production capacity of 0.75 mtpa of LNG, and two 220,000m3 LNG storage tanks.
Technical Details
- Storage capacity:
- Constructor:
- Bechtel: design, construction and commissioning four liquefaction trains
- GE Oil & Gas: Supply of gas compression trains
- Licensor: The terminal utilises ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade® technology
Ongoing Projects/Project Status
- The SPL Expansion Project is being designed for total production capacity of approximately 20 million tonnes per annum of LNG
- Completion is scheduled for 2026.
- The terminal was an import terminal, for details see Sabine Pass LNG Import Terminal, however due to the surplus of natural gas in the USA, the terminal was expanded to add export capabilities.
- The project was completed in 2016
- Project cost was budgeted at $6 Billion
Suppliers / Customers
- Suppliers:
- The facility is supplied by the Cheniere Creole Trail Pipeline, a bidirectional, 94-mile, 42-inch pipeline connecting the Sabine Pass LNG facility with a number of large interstate pipelines. The Creole Trail Pipeline was placed into service in spring 2008 and runs easterly approximately 16 miles from Sabine Pass LNG to Johnson Bayou, and then northeasterly for an additional 78 miles.
- The Creole Trail Pipeline is interconnected with Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line (Transco), Texas Eastern Transmission Gas Pipeline, Trunkline Gas Company Pipeline and the Natural Gas Pipeline Company Of America.
