Brief Description

  • The Bontang LNG plant, operated by PT Badak in East Kalimantan, Bontang, Indonesia, processes the gas from a huge reserve discovered in 1972 at Badak Field, East Kalimantan, as well as the Samberah, Nilam and Mutiara fields.
  • It is one of the largest liquifaction plants in the world initially designed and built for 2 plants, has succeeded with an expansion to become 8 trains and equipped with additional facility to produce LPG. Such additional facility and plant development has increased the LNG production from initial capacity of 3.3 millions tons in 1977 to more than 22 million tons of LNG

  • 1972 - Huge gas reserve discovered at Badak Field, East Kalimantan
  • 1973 - LNG sales contract was executed by 5 Japan buyers namely: The Chubu Electric Co., The Kansai Electric Power Co., Kyushu Electric Power Co., Nippon Steel Corp. and Osaka Gas Co.Ltd.
  • 1977 - LNG Terminal commissioned with two trains, A & B
  • 1980, construction commenced on train C and D
  • 1988 - LPG extraction facilities were commissioned
  • 1989 - Train E Commissioned
  • 1993 - Train F Commissioned
  • 1997 - Train G Commissioned
  • 1999 - Train H and the 3rd loading pier Commissioned
  • 2004 - Train-I project adds another 2.95 million ton LNG/year production
