- The refinery is now capable of using sour crudes.

- 1964 - Refinery is commissioned
- 1969 - Capacity increased to 3.0 million tons per annum
- 1987 - 500,000 TPA Delayed Coker & 50,000 TPA LPG Plant added
- 1988 - Revamp to increase capacity
- 1997 - Commissioning of catalytic reformer
- 1998 - 60,000 TPA Wax Hydro-finishing Unit commissioned
- 2003 - Major expansion and upgrade completed, bringing capacity up to 6.0 million tons per annum
- 2007 - Axens awarded licence for Prime-G+™ unit
- 2010 - Barauni Refinery MS Quality Upgradation Project completed
- 2017 - Barauni Refinery Coker Project completed
