Brief Description

• The refinery is a large medium complexity plant, that processes Domestic & Arab Light Crude Oil
• The crude is supplied via an undersea pipeline from Saudia Arabia.
• Majority of the products are exported
• The base oil plant is one of the largest of its kind in the world with an annual capacity of 400,000 tonnes

Projects

• The Bapco Sitrah Refinery Upgrade and Expansion Project aims at enhancing the refinery configuration, by increasing the throughput from 267,000 to 360,000 barrel per day as well as improving the product slate

History

• 1936 - The Bahrain Refinery - with a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day - opened
• 1968 - Bahrain Refinery expansion programme completed with 250,000 barrel-a-day capacity
• 1997 - The Bahrain Government assumes 100% ownership of the Bahrain Refinery
• 2001 - Kerosene Merox units commissioned as part of the Refinery Modernisation Plan
• 2004 - JGC awarded Hydrocracker contract
• 2005 - Foster Wheeler Awarded refinery gas desulfurization (RGD) project
• 2007 - Start-up of Low Sulphur Diesel Production complex, constructed by JGC.
• 2008 - BAPCO established a joint venture with Finland’s Neste Oil Corporation to build a high-quality lubricant base oils plant
• 2013 - Technip awarded SRU contract
