- Location: on the southern coast of Sicily
- Capacity: 5.0 million tons/annum & 100,000 bbl/day
- Nelson Complexity:
Brief Description
- The refinery has been converted into a biorefinery
balanced refining capacity of 100 kbbl/d and a conversion index of 142.4%.
- Following a survey carried out by the consultant firm Wood McKenzie, the refinery was listed first in Europe for the environmental quality of its products
Refining Units
- Atmospheric Crude Distillation
- VDU

- Delayed Coker
- Alkylation unit
- Catalytic Reformer
- Hydrogen Unit
- Sulphur Recovery Unit
- LPG Treatment
- Desulphurisation
- Naphtha
- Gasoil
Terminal Capacity
- Crude Oil:
- Refined Products:
Crude Supply
- It processes heavy crude produced from nearby Eni fields offshore and onshore Sicily.
Products Produced
- Gasoline, Diesel, Naphtha
Projects
- The Gela Refinery Renovation Project was launched in 2013
- Currently there is an upgrade of its power plant, through the revamping of its boilers, aimed at increasing profitability by exploiting the synergies deriving from the integration of refining and power generation.
Other Information
- It supplies large volumes of petrochemical feedstock to Eni's in site petrochemical plants.
History
- 1963 - Refinery commissioned by Snamprogetti with 40,000 bpd capacity
- 1968 - Vacuum Distillation, Alkylation unit & FCC commissioned
- 1986 - Capacity increased by 38,000 bpd + Coker capacity increased
- 1989 - Sulphur recovery unit commissioned
- 1990 - Gasoil HDS, Hydrogen Unit & LPG Treating Unit commissioned
- 2003 - A new 90,000 bpd capacity CDU installed
- 2007 - CCR Reformer, Naphtha HT & Isomerisation unit commissioned
- 2012 - Partial and temporary stoppage announced at the Gela Refinery
