The plant in Cologne-North Godorf utilises crude oil from the Rotterdam oil pipeline from Rotterdam.
The South plant in Wesseling also utilises crude oil from the pipeline from Rotterdam as well as from the Nord West Oelleitung Pipeline connected with Wilhelmshaven.
Products Produced
The products derived from the crude oil refinery in the Rhineland produced are: gasoline in different qualities, aviation fuel, diesel fuel, heating oil, heavy fuel oil, propane and butane, bitumen, various precursors for the chemical industry
Ongoing Projects
Shell is working on the "Connect" project (As of 2012)
The project involves the construction of two tunnels under the Rhine River to connect the two refinery sites, which are 2.36 miles (3.8 kilometers) apart.
The tunnels are being developed by a specialist contractor. Jacobs is designing and installing the infrastructure inside the battery limits (ISBL) of each refinery site to connect each facility to the tunnels.
Once completed, the Connect project is anticipated to enable Shell to optimize operational synergies between the two sites. With the facility integration, Shell expects to enhance and increase its production of clean fuels.
Other Information
The refinery is the Rhineland in 2002 from the merger of the refinery, the former German oil company RWE DEA in Wesseling and the Shell refinery in Godorf emerged. It currently employs 1,600 permanent employees from different disciplines and forms from about 100 trainees. In addition, some 1,300 regular employees from partner companies working in the factory.
The distribution of products to 38% on ships, 28% are using tanker trucks and transported 21.7% on a pipeline to leave the factory. A further 11% of the manufactured products will have a pipeline directly to Lyondell Basell, a petrochemical company in the industry transported. Only 1% of the products leave the factory by rail.
