Sportsmail's Lawrence Booth in Mumbai writes: 'The first Test is done and dusted now, consigned to the history books, but there was no escaping the sense of what-if as Monty Panesar lifted English spirits on the first morning here at the Wankhede. If the wicket of Virender Sehwag owed more to a lazy shot than to the quality of the delivery, that of Sachin Tendulkar was a left-arm spinner's dream. Pitching middle and leg, then turning to hit off as Tendulkar groped at thin air, it would have done for any right-hander. To Tendulkar - Panesar's first Test wicket more than six years ago at Nagpur - it was especially sweet. The look on the spinner's face was a mixture of joy, disbelief and perhaps even a little anger. Double trouble: Panesar (left) took two wickets in the morning session But with this pitch expected to turn more as the game goes on, three wickets were the bare minimum for England after Alastair Cook lost another vital toss. And though he did well to bring Panesar on as early as the seventh over, it was debatable whether he should have replaced Jimmy Anderson - who had swung the second ball of the day into Gautam Gambhir's pads - rather than Stuart Broad. This pitch is beginning to look like a minefield as Panesar disturbs the surface once more, catching the shoulder of Pujara's bat there is no one there at gully to take the catch. He'll keep the strike with a single. 45th over: India 128-5 (Pujara 59, Dhoni 7) Dhoni eases Panesar through point for a single. Broad has been kept out of the attack for a long while now - he's just not looked reliable today. Pujara adds a single before alert fielding from Compton at point saves a certain boundary from Dhoni's blade. India's No 3 is 77 not out at tea, which means he has now made 324 runs in this series without being dismissed. Without him today, India would be in deep trouble. Like all top-class batsmen, Pujara apparently enjoys his fair share of luck. The Ahmedabad Test could have taken an entirely different course had Jimmy Anderson not misjudged the flight of the ball at mid-on when Pujara had made eight of his eventual 206 not out. And Anderson was again the guilty party today, missing a sharp chance in the gully off Panesar when Pujara had 60. For England, there must also be the concern that they will have to bat above themselves against India's trio of spinners on a pitch already taking turn and the ball disturbing the surface. Since they will bat last, they need a sizeable first-innings lead. Skipper: Dhoni is looking to rebuild India's innings But let's not quibble: England were handed the unenviable task of bowling first (again), and have kept India down to 2.78 an over. TEA ON DAY ONE: INDIA 250-3 (Kohli 0 Pujara 68) View from Sportsmail's cricket writer and editor of Wisden, Lawrence Booth in Ahmedabad The good news for England is that Graeme Swann has passed Jim Laker's haul of 193 to become England's most prolific Test wicket-taker of all time. He equalled Laker with the wicket of Gautam Gambhir, passed him by removing Virender Sehwag, and extended his lead with the scalp of Sachin Tendulkar. A handy trio. The bad news is that Swann has found some turn on day one. Heaven knows what Ravi Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha will do on this surface when England finally get their turn to bat. First, though, they must bowl India out, and Sehwag was not in the mood to oblige. He dominated an opening stand of 134 with Gambhir, who played a woeful shot against Swann, leaning back to cut an off-break - and losing his off-stump. That's the sixth time Swann has dismissed him in Tests, which makes Gambhir his official bunny. But Sehwag was in one of those zones where it looks almost impossible to bowl to him. Move a fielder to the left, and he steers it to the right. Take out the lone slip, and he glides it fine of the keeper for four. This was his first Test century for two years and 30 innings. Only the mow which cost him his wicket to Swann on 117 looked like the batsman who has occasionally struggled in between. And if England think India may have a weakness at No 3, they can forget it. Cheteshwar Pujara is unobtrusive and elegant, rather like the man he replaced, Rahul Dravid. Tendulkar was clearly not paying attention, miscuing Swann to Samit Patel at deep midwicket in the penultimate over before tea. Bresnan was expensive in his first spell but showed signs he was getting the ball to reverse. The crowd are very expectant as Sehwag edges closer to three figures with a single off the second ball. WICKET Gambhir b Swann 45 Tough day: England's bowlers toiled in the field on the first day Finally England find a breakthrough and it is Swann who takes the wicket of Gambhir. It was a smart piece of bowling as the batsman again goes back into the crease to try and play through the off side but this time is beaten as it skids through at takes off stump. 29th over: India 130-0 (Sehwag 85 Gambhir 41) The players are back out after the lunch break. Sehwag is 21 runs short of his century, while Gambhir will be looking to get to his half century. Anderson takes the ball for the first over after the break. By reaching lunch on 120 without loss after winning a critical toss, India have grabbed the early initiative in this series and - just as importantly - watched their openers, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, ease themselves back into form. At one stage it looked as if Sehwag was on course to score a hundred before lunch, but Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad finally settled into a rhythm with about half an hour to go before the break. Their tight line, though, was nowhere to be seen in the first 90 minutes. James Anderson pitched too full, Broad bowled both sides of the wicket, and Tim Bresnan was made to look like cannon fodder by Sehwag. One straight six, immediately after a pair of fours, was just dismissive. There has been plenty of talk ahead of this series about the need for England's batsmen to show patience and discipline, but the same applies to their bowlers. Keeps the rest of the over tight as England have managed for the last few overs. 25th over: India 111-0 (Sehwag 71 Gambhir 36) Chance with the second ball. Sehwag tries to manufacture a shot, but he mis-hits it but the ball lands short of the fielder and a single from the over. Broad bowls out the over with dot balls. But the final ball goes for FOUR, which will no doubt frustrate the England bowler. Two runs from the last two overs and if you are an England fan then you will hope that this frustration will lead to wickets, we will see. 21st over: India 101-0 (Sehwag 66 Gambhir 33) Broad is back in the attack after that expensive over from Bresnan. Dot ball first up. These dot balls will frustrate the Indian batsmen, and that is what England need to do. One run comes off the final ball. 20th over: India 101-0 (Sehwag 66 Gambhir 32) 100 is up from the first ball of the 20th over, makes you wonder what the score could be by the close of play, India have a long batting line up, but if the openers carry on like this, how many of them will we see? Two off the over from Swann. 19th over: India 99-0 (Sehwag 65 Gambhir 31) What a start to the over, FOUR, FOUR, SIX. Sehwag really is a man in form and certainly enjoying this first session. The third ball is launched over the boundary, he got a clean swing and sent the ball into the empty stand over long-on. 18th over: India 84-0 (Sehwag 50 Gambhir 31) Sehwag gets his 50, sees a single go down the offside. Sehwag flicks the next ball for a single. 15th over: India 66-0 (Sehwag 36 Gambhir 27) Bresnan stays on at the other end and he keeps his bowling neat and tidy with Gambhir gets a single from the penultimate ball of the over. One from the over. 14th over: India 65-0 (Sehwag 36 Gambhir 26) Cook decides it is time for some spin and brings on Swann. First ball is a full toss, but luckily only goes for a single. There is a little bit of encouragement for Swann, but no luck in his first over as four runs are conceded from his first over. 13th over: India 61-0 (Sehwag 35 Gambhir 23) Bresnan tries a bouncer but the ball only reaches chest height and is subsequently sent to the boundary by Gambhir for FOUR. Four dot balls follow. Time for drinks and I'm sure England's players will be grateful of the break. 12th over: India 57-0 (Sehwag 35 Gambhir 19) You get the feeling that England need to get Graeme Swann on, Broad has had little joy so far as he goes for another run-filled over. Including a FOUR that was sent past a diving cover from Sehwag. Eight runs from the over 11th over: India 42-0 (Sehwag 28 Gambhir 18) There is not a huge crowd in the stadium for this opening morning, but they make plenty of noise when they want to and so far they have had plenty to cheer, FOUR and the crowd cheer the ball over the boundary as Sehwag guides the ball wide of third man. 10th over: India 49-0 (Sehwag 21 Gambhir 18) Broad keeps the ball at the other end, first ball is dug in but fails to make chest height and sent away for a single. FOUR A half volley from Gambhir sends the ball all the way through square leg. Good start: India's opening pair Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag frustrated England in the morning session 9th over: India 37-0 (Sehwag 20 Gambhir 14) Tim Bresnan comes into the attack for England, replacing Anderson. One run off the third ball of his over to Sehwag. 8th over: India 36-0 (Sehwag 19 Gambhir 14) Appeal for England's fielders as Broad's first ball hits Gambhir on the pad, the umpire is unmoved and there is no DRS in this series as India are not fans of the system, anyway, replays show the ball was going well down the leg side, so it would have been an wasted review had it been available. Two runs for Gambhir off the next ball and with the final ball Broad smashes the stumps, but no wicket as Gambhir moved out of the way as he was unhappy some movement behind the sight screen, a dead ball was called. 7th over: India 31-0 (Sehwag 19 Gambhir 11) FOUR Sehwag sends Anderson to the boundary with the first ball of the over, a short ball, but the batsman did well to make his own room to get the shot away. FOUR Anderson goes for a second boundary in the over as Sehwag goes for the ball on the front foot. FOUR A bit wide from Anderson and again Sehwag goes forward to send the ball over the ropes. 12 off the over and the Indian batsmen look like they are playing their way into the game. 6th over: India 19-0 (Sehwag 7 Gambhir 11) Gambhir flicks the first ball off his pads for a couple of runs wide of deep square. Fourth ball is a bouncer from Broad and it is pulled away in front of square for two more runs. Four off the over. 5th over: India 15-0 (Sehwag 7 Gambhir 7) Sehwag defends the first ball. FOUR Anderson bowls short of a length and the ball is flicked away fine towards long-leg. Next ball is a yorker from Anderson and then dot balls see out the over. 4th over: India 11-0 (Sehwag 3 Gambhir 7) It is a slightly nervy start by England, Broad goes close with his opening delivery, but the ball goes away for one bye as Matt Prior fails to get hold of the ball. Dot balls for the next five deliveries. 3rd over: India 10-0 (Sehwag 3 Gambhir 7) Anderson seems to be getting used to the conditions as the first five balls are dot balls, but the final ball of the over brings up the first boundary of the day as Gambhir gets an inside edge down to fine leg and away for four. 2nd over: India 6-0 (Sehwag 3 Gambhir 3) Stuart Broad is the next to take the ball for England. And it is a good over from Broad, digging in. Two runs come off the final ball, again it is prevented from going all the way to the boundary by the slow outfield. 1st over: India 4-0 (Sehwag 1 Gambhir 3) James Anderson opens up first for England. Gambhir hits the ball to middle and leg for a single. Sehwag pushes the second ball to cover for one. Gambhir then hits two with a good stop by Bresnan to prevent a boundary.
