Gary Lineker has launched a Twitter attack on Dominic Cummings despite his BBC colleague Simon McCoy slamming him for 'abusing his position' and breaking impartiality by accusing the PM of lying. The news anchor hit out at the sports pundit after Lineker sounded off about Boris Johnson's [/news/coronavirus/index.html coronavirus] briefing last night. The Prime Minister last night stood by chief advisor [/news/dominic-cummings/index.html Dominic Cummings] despite allegations he broke lockdown rules three times. Simon McCoy (left) has attacked Gray Lineker (right) for his tweet during the press conference As Johnson claimed his top aide had acted responsibly by driving from London to Durham, Lineker tweeted: 'Please. Stop. Lying.' McCoy hit out at the presenter by suggesting that sharing his opinion on social media undermined BBC impartiality rules. He said: 'Please. Stop. If you speak for yourself - write a letter. If you're speaking for BT Sport - up to you. 'But if you are speaking with your BBC hat on - you are abusing a position which puts BBC journalists in an impossible position.' Lineker refused to back down and told the news anchor that it was he who did not understand the broadcaster's rules for staff. 'Check the rules,' he said. 'That only applies to those who work in news or current affairs. I speak for me. No one else. Good day.' McCoy took to Twitter the following morning and appeared to apologise to Lineker. He said: 'I clearly got this wrong. I apologise to you Gary.' In response, Lineker said: 'Apology accepted, Simon. No problem at all.' It isn't the first time the Match of the Day host has hit out at the Government over Cummings' trip to Durham. When the news broke, he tweeted: 'Rules are made to be broken. Hard therefore not to conclude that lockdown is broken.' He also said: 'Not sure how this Dom com will end. This, though, should not be about what party you support. It shouldn't be about whether you're leave or remain. 'None of that should matter one iota. This is about right and wrong. This is about the truth. This is about trust.' It comes after [/news/bbc/index.html BBC] political editor Laura Kuenssberg faced anger after she appeared to defend [/news/dominic-cummings/index.html Dominic Cummings]. Within 30 minutes of the allegations of lockdown flouting breaking, Kuenssberg shared a rebuttal from an unnamed source claiming that the trip to Durham was 'within [the] guidelines'. Laura Kuenssberg faced fierce criticism yesterday after appearing to defend Dominic Cummings following reports that he had flouted lockdown rules The tweet said: 'Source says his trip was within guidelines as Cummings went to stay with his parents so they could help with childcare while he and his wife were ill - they insist no breach of lockdown'. Her reply was immediately met by a chorus of condemnation, with some branding her a 'mouthpiece for the Government' and [https://inborncricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/star-sports-anchor-mayanti-langer.html https://inborncricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/star-sports-anchor-mayanti-langer.html] a 'Tory stooge'. Piers Morgan said the explanation was 'absolute nonsense', and ex-Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell demanded Miss Kuenssberg 'get a grip' for repeatedly relying on 'sources close to Dominic Cummings'. Philosopher A. C. Grayling also took issue, tweeting: 'It's time to end anonymous 'No 10 source' (=Cummings) briefings (=to Laura Kuenssberg) =lies, propaganda, spin, dead cats etc.' adverts.addToArray("pos":"inread_player")Advertisement

Inglis Will Return To Origin Says Walters

Queensland coach Kevin Walters has left Maroons fans salivating at the prospect of Greg Inglis making an Alfie Langer-style State of Origin encore straight out of Warrington. As if rugby league wasn't already buzzing over Inglis's shock comeback announcement, now Walters has earmarked a return to the game's biggest stage for the inspirational former Queensland skipper. "He's going to deny it and say he's not interested in playing Origin but the door is always open for GI," Walters told Fox League Live. Unlike most, Walters is not in the least surprised that the former world player of the year and three-times grand final winner wants back in. "He hasn't left the arena how he would like to leave it and what a great signing for Warrington," Walters said. "There's so many great players in our game in our history but Greg, look back on the highlights reels, whether it was South Sydney with their first premiership in (almost) 50 years, and then the reign he had in State of Origin - he's Queensland's most-ever try-scorer. "In all the great moments that Greg's had throughout his career, it's just amazing, and I'm looking forward to seeing him back not only for Warrington but for [https://inborncricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/star-sports-anchor-mayanti-langer.html https://inborncricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/star-sports-anchor-mayanti-langer.html] the mighty Maroons." With coronavirus pushing this year's Origin back to November, Inglis won't be available for Origin until 2021 - exactly 20 years after Allan Langer returned from Warrington, aged almost 36, to inspire the Maroons to a dramatic, series-deciding 40-14 triumph over NSW in Brisbane. In a quirky twist of fate, Inglis, who turns 34 next year, has also signed for the same English Super League club. And Walters won't rule out a similar fairytale return to the Origin cauldron. "He's obviously been a great player. The door is always open for great Queensland players. We never shut the door. That's been our way," Walters said. "We dragged Arthur Beetson out of Parramatta reserve grade at 35 years of age to lead Queensland out in the first-ever state of Origin, so that set the precedent for years to come." Former Rabbitohs premiership-winning teammate Sam Burgess believes if any player can match Langer's extraordinary Origin comeback, it's Inglis. "There is no better big-game player. When the big games are on, Greg Inglis never missed. Greg at Origin time was a different beast," Burgess said. Walters agrees. "When he became Queensland captain, that game in Melbourne (in 2018), he did everything possible to get Queensland over the line," said the Maroons mentor. "You could just see the inspiration in his eyes and his body language the whole week that he was just so proud to lead Queensland out. "He was just amazing."
