FILM
By MATTHEW BOND
THE MAIN EVENT
Star Wars: T he Force Awakens is a triumph.

I loved the roar of approval that rolled down from the balcony of the Grand Palais at the Cannes Film Festival in May
For a lot of people, the highlight of the 2015 film year will either have been Spectre or Star Wars, but the 24th James Bond film struck me as more good than great.
As for the return of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia… well, I'm happy to admit that, even back in 1977, the Force was never entirely with me, but The Force Awakens is a triumph.

I loved the roar of approval that rolled down from the balcony of the Grand Palais at the Cannes Film Festival in May, as Pixar finally unveiled the touching and wonderfully clever children's film Inside Out. The roar meant the public were in and that they liked what they saw.
At the Oscars in February I'm pretty sure we're going to discover they weren't wrong.

But it was another animated children's film that provided the real highlight of the year. Tomm Moore's exquisitely drawn, modern Irish folk tale Song Of The Sea was as touching as it was beautiful.
THE NON-EVENT
Fifty Shades Of Grey's director Sam Taylor-Johnson did her best and the very silly tale was neither quite as bad as feared or, indeed, anything like as rude as some hoped
I'd confidently expected this to have been won easily by Fifty Shades Of Grey, but director Sam Taylor-Johnson had done her best and the very silly tale was neither quite as bad as feared or, indeed, anything like as rude as some hoped.

That left the big disappointments to come from elsewhere, with Disney's muddled glimpse into the future, Tomorrowland, crashing and burning and Joe Wright's Peter Pan prequel, Pan, being pointless and chaotic.
But what really stays with me from this year is the muted applause that greeted the end of the first screening of the final instalment of The Hunger Games. Cynically splitting Suzanne Collins's final book, Mockingjay, into two box-office-boosting parts was both greedy and a terrible mistake.
THE BIG TREND
Authentic vertigo, with the combination of 3D photography, stunning visual effects and IMAX projection prompting widespread reports of dizziness, nausea and, in a few particularly bad cases, even vomiting.

Understandably, not everyone will see this as a cinematic step forward, but I thought it was used to wonderful effect in Baltasar Kormákur's extraordinarily authentic-feeling Everest. In The Walk, Robert Zemeckis told the story of French tightrope walker Philippe Petit, who strung a wire between New York's Twin Towers in 1974 and then walked across.
If the point when he stepped on to the wire didn't get you, then the moment he broke all the rules of tightrope walking and looked down to the streets 1,350ft below definitely did. I almost had to lie on the floor. THE
BEST PERFORMANCE
It would be refreshing if Matt Damon 's derring-do in The Martian was acknowledged, although big, commercial films such as Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic have a habit of missing out come awards time
With the exception of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara for Carol and Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs, I'm not sure how many Oscar-worthy performances we've seen so far this year.

But Bafta predictions seem much easier, particularly in the Best Actress category, where Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years, Maggie Smith for The Lady In The Van and Carey Mulligan for either Far From The Madding Crowd and/or Suffragette seem certain to secure nominations.
And I certainly won't be complaining if Saoirse Ronan gets a reward for her hugely watchable performance in Brooklyn. Surely assured of nominations on both sides of the Atlantic is Mark Rylance, who was so good as the Russian agent in the Tom Hanks espionage thriller Bridge Of Spies.

And it would be refreshing if Matt Damon's derring-do in The Martian was acknowledged, although big, commercial films such as Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic have a habit of missing out come awards time.
THE COMEBACK
Mad Max: Fury Road made a triumphant return despite it being 30 years since Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, the third film in the original series starring Mel Gibson
These days it's not just actors and actresses who make comebacks, it's entire franchises too.

Leading the way this year and setting an astonishingly high standard was Jurassic World, which arrived in cinemas a mere 22 years after the much-loved original with genetically modified dinosaurs that were big and scary.
I loved 'em. Then there was Mad Max: Fury Road, making a triumphant return despite it being 30 years since Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, the third film in the original series starring Mel Gibson. This time around it was Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy and a supporting cast, seemingly of thousands, who took the reins, and a very good job of it they did too.

Oh, and we can't forget Star Wars, of course, with Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher all defying time to reprise roles they first played 38 years ago.
For individuals, two veteran actresses caught my eye - 76-year-old Lily Tomlin for her indomitable turn in the brave, intelligent and very funny Grandma, and 71-year-old Jacqueline Bisset, who shone in a supporting role in the surprisingly good cancer-weepie Miss You Already, starring Toni Colette and Drew Barrymore.
Setting an astonishingly high standard was Jurassic World , which arrived in cinemas a mere 22 years after the much-loved original with genetically modified dinosaurs that were big and scary

THE BEST LINE
No contest really.

‘Chewie, we're home,' announces Han Solo to his constant hairy companion, Chewbacca, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, setting George Lucas's space saga well and truly back in motion. But if that didn't work for you, how about Matt Damon's ‘In the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option; I'm gonna have to science the s*** out of this', from The Martian.
THAT WAS THE YEAR OF...
Some truly superb documentary feature films - Asif Kapadia's heartbreaking Amy, about Amy Winehouse; Palio, Cosima Spender's beautiful-looking picture about the historic horse race in Siena; and He Named Me Malala, Davis Guggenheim's quietly revealing documentary about Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistan schoolgirl who was shot and left for dead by a Taliban gunman. But it was also the year of some gorgeous-looking films set in that most photogenic of decades, the Fifties.

Rooney Mara played the New York shopgirl who fell in love with a wealthy older woman in Carol, while in Brooklyn Saoirse Ronan was the New York shopgirl who fell in love, first with a nice Italian-American plumber, and then with a thoroughly decent member of the rugby club back home in Ireland, and eventually had to choose between the two.

MUSIC
By TIM DE LISLE
MY TOP 5 SHOWS
Take That live was a carnival with a pop concert attached
1.

U2 (Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam) Back from the brink, thanks to the biggest, brightest video screen ever.
2. Sting and Paul Simon (Forum Mediolanum, Milan) The power of song, like a bridge over troubled band relationships.
3.

Take That (SSE Hydro Arena, Glasgow) A carnival with a pop concert attached.
4. Randy Newman (Royal Festival Hall, London) Satire and sweet sorrow, now reaching people who grew up with Toy Story.
5.

Ezra Furman (Shepherd's Bush Empire, London) A man in a skirt fills the gap between Lou Reed and doo-wop.
THE MAIN EVENT
For most of the year, it was Ed Sheeran at Wembley Stadium: one man and his loops, somehow selling 200,000 tickets.

But then along came Adele
For most of the year, it was Ed Sheeran at Wembley Stadium: one man and his loops, somehow selling 200,000 tickets. But then along came Adele's 25, to prove that, even in an age of live music and streaming, an album can still make more noise than the biggest gig.
When it finally arrived, 25 was unstoppable. It was good enough not to be an anti-climax, but no more than that: one part 21 (powerful piano ballads, majestically sung) to two parts 19 (patchy all-purpose pop). Which added up to three stars.
THE NON-EVENT
Sam Smith's song for Spectre, Writing's On The Wall, became the first Bond theme to go to No 1, but that just goes to show you can't always trust public taste.

It's a mediocre song which uses orchestration as a steroid. Much like Christoph Waltz in the movie, Smith is miscast: he does more emoting in four minutes than Bond has done in 24 films.
THE BIG TREND
There was one interesting small trend this year: musical self-mockery.

The best thing Adele did, as she promoted 25, was to enter an Adele lookalike contest
It's doubtful whether music has big trends any more, now that it reaches us on the internet, where a million flowers bloom.
But there was one interesting small trend this year: musical self-mockery. The best thing Adele did, as she promoted 25, was to enter an Adele lookalike contest. She didn't look very like herself at all, sporting a prosthetic nose and chin, but she got to show her sense of humour, which is top-class, and the moment when the other Adeles heard her sing was priceless.

Pop has now been so big for so long, it can afford to send itself up. Something similar happened on American television, where James Corden introduced Carpool Karaoke, the best motoring-related TV micro-format since Star In A Reasonably Priced Car. When a singer as great as Stevie Wonder sits there singing along to his own songs and cracking jokes (‘All Englishmen,' he told Corden, ‘look alike'), the music is mocked and celebrated at the same time.
THE BEST PERFORMANCE
For the second year running, the biggest crowd-pleaser at Glastonbury wasn't one of the headliners but the old stager in the Sunday teatime slot.

Like Dolly Parton before him, Lionel Richie had the tunes, the charm, the chutzpah and the irony that Sunday teatime seems to demand. Emily Eavis calls it ‘the fourth headline slot, in a way': [http://themomsite.mystrikingly.com/blog/some-small-inexpensive-gift-ideas-for-adults themomsite.mystrikingly.com] it's on its way to being the first.
THE COMEBACK
To be a pop star is to run the risk of peaking early and fading fast.

After his second album flopped, Mark Ronson was a prime case in point. But just when he couldn't get arrested, he came up with the song he will be remembered for: Uptown Funk, a track so full of life and energy that a year after its release it is still getting the party started.

THE BEST LINE
It wasn't in a song, or even on a record.

But it was said by a musician, and it was vitally important. This year's John Peel memorial lecture was given by Brian Eno. His talk was a bold attempt to define art and culture. ‘Art,' he argued, ‘is everything that you don't have to do.' We have to eat but we don't have to write recipes; ‘we have to move, but we don't have to do the rumba, the tango, the Charleston and the twerk'.

Speaking at the British Library in London, Eno held a distinguished audience in the palm of his hand as he showed that imagining, pretending, elaborating and embellishing are central to our identity. As children we all paint and sing and write, and when we shrivel into adults, we lose less of that expressiveness than we might think - it just flows into our clothes, our conversation, our taste in music and television, our sense of self.
THAT WAS THE YEAR OF...
Justin Bieber, of all people.

One week in November he was No 1 in the charts - and No 2 and No 4. (Adele, inevitably, was at No 3.) He was also number 25, 33, 34 and 38. Dishing up decent R'n'B with self-aware lyrics, he became the first act since The Beatles to replace themselves at No 1. There's usually no way back from being a child star who loses the plot but Bieber found one - by beliebing in himself.

CLASSICAL & OPERA
By DAVID MELLOR

THE MAIN EVENT
A 150th anniversary doesn't have the same resonance as a centenary, but every Sibelius lover must welcome the extraordinary glut of new issues and reissues this year that marked the Finnish master's birth in 1865.

Almost everything that he composed, great and small, was brought back to life.
THE NON-EVENT
The much-vaunted and expensive William Tell at Covent Garden from Italian director Damiano Michieletto was one of the most spectacular failures ever witnessed at the Royal Opera House.

There was almost a riot in the audience during the rape scene but, believe me, it was already a huge fiasco before then.
THE BIG TREND
This year, Kiss Me, Kate was a standout hit at Opera North
Opera companies, no doubt in despair at how few great crowd-pleasing 20th-century operas have been written, are increasingly pillaging musical theatre to entertain their audiences.

This year, Kiss Me, Kate was a standout hit at Opera North; Fiddler On The Roof with Bryn Terfel packed them in at Grange Park; and Terfel again tried to rescue a near-bankrupt English National Opera as Sweeney Todd with charming, if not especially musical, support from Emma Thompson. More, please.
THE BEST PERFORMANCE
It's got to be Terfel in his 50th birthday year, showing his extraordinary versatility, not only in those two musicals but also in an excellent The Flying Dutchman at the Royal Opera House
It's got to be Terfel in his 50th birthday year, showing his extraordinary versatility, not only in those two musicals but also in an excellent The Flying Dutchman at the Royal Opera House.

And the performance he put in at my partner Penny's big birthday was quite something as well!
THE COMEBACK

What a joy to hear Benjamin Britten's protégé Steuart Bedford in the finest possible fettle conducting a magnificent Death In Venice at Garsington 42 years after he replaced an indisposed Britten to conduct the world premiere.
THE BEST LINE
‘For the very survival of the ENO, Berry must leave, preferably soon.' This was from Martyn Rose, outgoing chairman of English National Opera, about the company's controversial artistic director John Berry.

Six months later Berry had indeed gone, but because he was allowed to continue on his loss-making run for so long, the damage he has done will take a long time to repair.
THAT WAS THE YEAR OF...
Supposed big cuts in grants that were going to decimate live music in this country that thankfully didn't happen. This is, not least, because Chancellor George Osborne is a committed supporter of the arts, even if David Cameron is a cultural desert.

Only English National Opera looks up to its neck in deep doo-doo, and that's its own fault not the funders.

THEATRE
By GEORGINA BROWN
THE MAIN EVENT
Rufus Norris made a striking start as the new artistic director of the National Theatre with Carol Ann Duffy's stunning contemporary version of the 15th-century morality play Everyman, with Chiwetel Ejiofor marvellous as the swaggering playboy progressing to spiritual enlightenment.

Some of the shows in Norris's first season were even better. Husbands & Sons was three of D H Lawrence's plays for the price of one, in Ben Power's brilliantly cut and spliced trio of kitchen-sink dramas staged simultaneously by director Marianne Elliott.
And Polly Findlay's bold reimagining of As You Like It turned an office into a forest.
Sir Kenneth Branagh's new company brought dramatic magic, majesty and Dame Judi Dench into the West End with his The Winter's Tale, but the best new play - and production - was The Father, Christopher Hampton's remarkable translation of hot French playwright Florian Zeller's work, directed with forensic precision by James MacDonald so that the audience witnesses, almost literally, the emptying of the head and the confusion and paranoia of an old man with dementia.
THE NON-EVENT
Big names didn't make up for productions lacking big ideas, not that it stopped Benaddicts and Cumberbitches storming the Barbican to take pics of his Hamlet on their mobiles.

Stephen Merchant, even more of a human stick insect in the flesh than his ‘Oggmonster' Nathan in The Office, made a very sticky stage debut in Richard Bean's terrible The Mentalists.
THE BIG TREND
Barbra Streisand didn't turn up at Funny Girl but Sheridan Smith brought something to the role Streisand didn't find: consummate comic timing and tears
Magic shows cast a phenomenal spell: Impossible combined conjuring tricks and death-defying stunts for a sell-out summer season in Shaftesbury Avenue; The Illusionists lined up an escapologist, a mind-reader, a marksman and more, breaking box-office records for pre-sales without cheating; Derren Brown threw in hypnotism, making a miracle of his new show, Miracle.
Also, a couple of first nights became a once-in-a-lifetime thrill.

When Carole King came on stage at the end of Beautiful, the story of her life, and then sang You've Got A Friend, I thought I had died and gone to jukebox heaven. And it happened again on the opening night of What's It All About?, part-gig, part love letter to Burt Bacharach.
The frail, snowy-haired darling tottered to the piano and played Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head and teardrops ran down my cheeks. Talk about Magic Moments. Alas, Barbra Streisand didn't turn up at Funny Girl but Sheridan Smith brought something to the role Streisand didn't find: consummate comic timing and tears.

THE BEST PERFORMANCE
Imelda Staunton was magnificent and moving as the starstruck monster Mama Rose in Gypsy
Kenneth Cranham was extraordinarily affecting as the bewildered man besieged by dementia and losing everything, including his sense of self, in The Father; Denise Gough unravelled as a drug addict in People, Places And Things; Ralph Fiennes brought phenomenal energy to the visionary Tanner in Shaw's Man And Superman; Imelda Staunton was magnificent and moving as the starstruck monster Mama Rose in Gypsy.

THE BEST LINE
‘Who exactly am I?

I feel as if I am losing all my leaves,' is the cry from the man with dementia in The Father, echoing King Lear. But the most memorable line was: ‘I'm sorry. I've completely gone,' from Sir Lenny Henry's alcoholic prof of English Lit, Henry losing his way on the opening night of Educating Rita.
He left the stage and returned, word-perfect. He recovered but the audience did not.
THAT WAS THE YEAR OF…
Projections being an implicit part of drama. Sinatra: The Man And His Music brought Ol' Blue Eyes back to life through eye-boggling hi-tech video projection and computer animation of old film and TV footage, with Sinatra's lip a bit wobbly and expression a bit shifty, and him smoking while crooning.

Frankly, a bit spooky.
In Dawn French: 30 Million Minutes, her life so far was told through projections of grainy photographs from the family album of Dawn as a bridesmaid and wannabe ballerina.
In Golem, live actor-musicians interacted with the animated clay creature, Golem, projected behind them with mesmerising dexterity.

And the atmosphere of guilt and grief was heightened in Little Eyolf at the Almeida with projections of the rippling circle of water beneath which Eyolf drowns.

ART
By PHILIP HENSHER
THE MAIN EVENT
The triumph at The Royal Academy was the generous, angry, funny, incisive spirit of the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.

He is direct and simple but profound - a rightly popular show
The Royal Academy had a splendid year, with one marvellous show in its upstairs gallery following another.
But the triumph was the generous, angry, funny, incisive spirit of the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. He is direct and simple but profound - a rightly popular show.
THE NON-EVENT
Tate Britain's Artist & Empire, which runs until April 10, was an opportunity missed.

The subject matter - art relating to the British Empire - needed to be looked at with an open mind. The exhibition had made its mind up at the beginning of the process, and it had a hectoring effect.
THE BIG TREND
The stars this year were often women artists, working on a grander and more ambitious scale than convention allows - at both London Tate galleries alone, Marlene Dumas, Barbara Hepworth and the sublime Agnes Martin were hugely impressive.

THE BEST PERFORMANCE
Not many contemporary artists are interested in old-fashioned skill.

The Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi trained as a miniature artist, and his beautiful work, which was on show at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, took the old tradition forward into new means of expression.
THE COMEBACK
The Royal Academy has had some slightly disappointing shows recently, notably on Rubens and David Hockney.

There was no questioning the power of the sequence of exhibitions upstairs there, however, that took us from Richard Diebenkorn in the spring to Joseph Cornell in the summer to the extraordinary 18th-century pastellist Jean-Etienne Liotard now (until January 31).
A stomping return to form by a grand old institution.
THE BEST LINE
‘Art?

We're more interested in plumbing' - the architectural collective Assemble accepting the Turner Prize.
THAT WAS THE YEAR OF…
The portrait.
Two of the best shows of the year were thoughtful, penetrating examinations of the human face. Another good book is "Tracking And The Art Of Seeing: How To Read Animal Tracks"
With the use of a field guide, anyone can successfully read animal tracks to get a reliable indicator of the animal's habits. This book is a field guide to learn to read animal tracks and signs. Written by tracking expert and renowned nature photographer Paul Rezendes it specializes on North American wildlife.

This is a number 5 best seller book dealing with Animal behaviour. It is also an excellent reference book for hikers and nature lovers.

When buying a field guide as a present, do buy one that contains information about tracking animals who live in the part of the country where "the hunter" lives to eliminate species that are not relevant to the area. Buy several.
For under $13 you can get this fantastic Christmas stocking filler with 25 survival items in a genuine air-tight, waterproof, crushproof sardine can. I just love it. It is so small and yet efficient. I even carry one in my handbag, just in case you know; after all, I live in rural France and I have to drive in solitary country roads every day, so who knows... I hope I never need to open my Sardine can, but if I ever need a survival kit I know I have one handy waiting in my handbag.

With this small survival kit once it is open you can boil water in the can for your tea, use the first aid supplies to survive the wilderness, fish with the hook and line, orientate yourself with its miniature compass, the options are endless!

This survival kit can be very useful in an emergency situation. It might not have everything one might need, but it is inexpensive, easy to carry (it fits in the palm of your hand, a jean pocket, etc) and with a little use of brains it can really save lives in an emergency situation. You can even use the can itself as a signal mirror if needed!

The perfect gift for hunters but also for hikers, campers, climbers, boaters, skiers, sledders, fishermen, off-roaders, travelers, cyclists. The ideal gift for all those who enjoy the outdoors. It may seem a little gimmick, but a useful gimmick it is and I recommend everyone have at least one of these kits for their hunter. Of course, there are several higher quality survival kits in the market but they are bigger and pricier and the chances are that a weekend hunter will not need such elaborate survival kit. This survival kit in a can is just ideal for the weekend hunter and outdoors enthusiast.

Survival Kit Sardine Can Review

4. During the summer or in very hot and sunny areas, gloves will be a good protection from sunburn. Even survival instructors at the Air Force Academy consider gloves an essential item in a surviving kit!

Camo net gloves have extra-long cuffs for comfort and Grip-Tech dots for better handling. Hunting Dog Blind Killer Weed Kit
Now, isn't this cute? Dogs are not only a man's best friend but they are also a hunter's best partner and most hunters would not leave the house without their dogs. Unfortunately, dogs can be somehow boisterous and there is a delicate balance between concealing a dog and providing him with a good window to watch the action. This is where dog blinds become handy. Sometimes you just can't beat a commercially manufactured dog blind. Layout-style blinds designed for field hunting have become very popular in recent years.

Dog blinds are by far the most effective way to conceal and also to protect a hunting dog. Of course hunters can make their own blind concealers but this blind killer weed kit will save him precious time that he can enjoy hunting rather than cutting grass to conceal his dog blind.

Hunting geese and ducks can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. If your hunter uses this kit for his blinds on his next hunt, he will notice a difference in how close he can get geese to commit. An ideal gift for a hunter for less than $30. I was against hunting for a while myself, until I saw how it was practised. In France, hunting is heavily regulated and you are only able to hunt certain species and only at certain times of the year.
As I see it now, hunting (for eating) is not any worst than buying your meet at a supermarket. In a way one could argue that it is more human to hunt a bird (who has the chance to scape) than to keep chickens in cages the whole of their lives until they end up on supermarket's shelves.
I must add, however, that I am against hunting endangered species just for the fun ot it.

Rodney Fagan
8 years ago from Johannesberg South Africa, The Gold Mine City
Sorry Princessa, This is one "area" where you and I differ greatly.
That when arming yourself and equiping yourself with protective gear, then going in and to hunt an animal, is treated as a sport, especially now! When entire species have already been exterminated! I do not think of it as a sport.
For it to be a sport, then hunt by all means, only put yourself at the same level as the quarry!
Do it by hand, take a deer or a bushpig on in hand to "hand" combat, then that could be some form of sport.

AUTHORWendy Iturrizaga
8 years ago from France
LadyLyell: Hi, we go hunting in the Indre department, in Tendu where we have the farm.
