  • New technologies (horizontal drilling, sidetracking, extended reach drilling, hydraulic fracturing) have been applied to boost the active well stock almost to 8 000

+++ Geology

+++ History

  • 1964 - The field was discovered
  • 1969 - Production began
  • 1999 - TNK-BP began its operations in the field
  • 2000 - EX-IM Bank awards loans to finance Halliburton and more than 25 other U.S. suppliers of oil field equipment for the rehabilitation of the Samotlor oil field
  • 2010 - Automated well control pilot project launched

+++ Other Information

  • Since development work began at Samotlor a total of 2 086 well clusters have been built. This approach resulted in the field having an unusually large number of idle wells. Since TNK-BP took over operations, however, a program of well interventions has reduced the idle well stock by 39% to its current level of about 2 109.
  • In turn, new technologies (horizontal drilling, sidetracking, extended reach drilling, hydraulic fracturing) have been applied to boost the active well stock almost to 8 000. In addition, a development program has been implemented at the Ust-Vakh acreage, with 283 wells drilled and reserves of over 50 million tons brought on stream.
