At that time two neighboring refineries started up - 1962 the Esso Refinery and in 1963 the Refinery Dea Scholven Inc. (as of 1969 Oberrhein Oil Refinery Inc. or OMW for short). In 1997, the two previously independent Karlsruhe refineries, owned by Esso and OMW, merged to form MiRO - Mineralölraffinerie Oberrhein GmbH & Co.
