The Oberrhein oil refinery is a young company but built on a solid foundation: at the beginning of the 60's the "Raffineriestandort" or Refinery Location Karlsruhe was founded. At that time two neighboring refineries started up - 1962 the Esso Refinery and in 1963 the Refinery Dea Scholven Inc. (as of 1969 Oberrhein Oil Refinery Inc. or OMW for short).
