Summary Information Ownership: Statoil Website: http://www.statoil.com/ Location: Kalundborg in Denmark Capacity: 5.5 million tons/annum & 110,000 bbl/day Nelson Complexity: Refining Units CDU, 110,000 bbl/day VDU Hydrocracker Diesel Desulphurisation, 20,000 bbl/day Visbreaking unit Terminal Capacity Crude Oil: Refined Products: Crude Supply The refinery primarily processes various crude oils and condensates from the North Sea, which are brought in by ship. Condensate comes chiefly from the Sleipner area via Statoil’s gas processing plant at Kårstø north of Stavanger. Products Produced petrol, jet fuel, diesel oil, propane, heating oil and fuel oil. Kalundborg delivers petrol and diesel oil with less than 50 ppm (0.005%) of sulphur. Ongoing Projects - Other Information Countries around the Baltic represent the principal market for products from the refinery. The fertiliser plant converts sulphur and nitrogen from the desulphurisation process for oil products into liquid ammonium thiosulphate (ATS). The result has been a substantial reduction in emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides from the refinery. History 1960 DanskVedolA/S built the refinery (20 kbbl/d) 1963 DanskESSO A/S takes over the refinery, the capacity is expanded to 70 kbbl/d in 1967 1981 The Visbreakeris installed (fuel oil conversion) 1982 The Powerformercapacity is expanded (reduction in lead) 1985 The Jetfuelunit is installed 1986 Statoil takes over the refinery 1986 Improvement of the waste water treatment plant 1989VPS/TC project for increased fuel oil conversion 1990 Sulphur Plant is installed (clausunit) Mild hydrocracker(fuel oil conversion) Powerformerexpansion 1995 Condensate refinery is inaugurated 1996 Low benzene gasoline is introduced 1997 Agreement about technical support for the SIRI oilfield 1998 - Soaker Visbreaker is in operation (heavy fuel to diesel) The refinery began to produce agricultural fertiliser in 2000, utilising a completely new facility designed in cooperation with Denmark’s Haldor Topsøe Ltd. Built at a cost of DKK 400 million, the Synflex facility came on stream in the summer of 2002 with an annual capacity of about one million tonnes of sulphur-free diesel oil (defined as 10 parts per million of sulphur, or 0.001%).
