Summary Information

  • Source: Mellitah, Libya
  • Destination: Gela in Sicily, Italy
  • Ownership: ENI, NOC
  • Website: http://www.eni.com/
  • Length: 520 kilometres ( miles)
  • Capacity: 8 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year
  • Status: Operating

+++ Details

  • The Greenstream, developed by Saipem is part of the Western Libya Gas Project; it connects the Mellitah Gas Processing Plant, on the Libyan coast, to Gela in Sicily, is 520 kilometres long, has a diameter of 32 inches and was laid at a depth which reach 1,127 metres. The depth and dip of the seabed where the pipeline was laid, the numerous cable crossings, the careful attention paid to the environment and the time constraints made Greenstream a high technology challenge.
  • The natural gas come from two fields: the Wafa Oil And Gas Field, located 500 km south of the coast, close to the border with Algeria, and the offshore field of Bahr Essalam, 110 km off the Libyan coast. Eni is operator, with a 50% stake, in the joint development of the fields. The other joint partner is NOC.

+++ Contractors

  • **Saipem:** Pipeline transportation and installation

+++ History

  • 2002 - Saipem awarded contract for the laying of the pipeline
