Description

  • Ekofisk heralded the start of the Norwegian oil age, it was the first commercially viable discovery on the Norwegian shelf and the first to start production
  • Ekofisk is an oil field located in the southern part of the North Sea. The water depth in the area is 70 - 75 metres. The field was produced to tankers until a concrete storage tank was installed in 1973.
  • The Ekofisk Complex comprises all installations which are connected with bridges on the central Ekofisk field.
  • Today, the operative parts of the Ekofisk Centre consist of the accommodation facilities, Ekofisk H and Ekofisk Q, the production facility Ekofisk C, the drilling and production facility Ekofisk X, the processing facility Ekofisk J and the production and processing facility Ekofisk M. From the wellhead facility Ekofisk A, located in the southern part of the field, production goes to the riser facility Ekofisk FTP for processing at the Ekofisk Centre. The pipeline from production facility Ekofisk B in the northern part of the field is routed to Ekofisk M. Ekofisk K is a facility for water injection.
  • The Complex is a field centre and hub for the production from the Ekofisk field itself, and from the other fields in the Greater Ekofisk Area.
  • In addition, production from other fields in the area has been - and is - transported via the Ekofisk Complex to the receiving terminals in Emden, Germany (gas) and Teesside, UK (oil)

History

  • 1969 - The Ekofisk discovery in was announced just before Christmas
  • 1971 - Ekofisk came onstream
  • 1977 - Ekofisk also saw the largest oil spill ever on the Norwegian shelf, the Bravo blowout. It took American well killer specialists eight days and nights to stop the blow-out.
  • 1980 - The Alexander Kielland accident led to the loss of 123 lives
  • 1987 - Water injection started up in a part of the field
  • 2003 - Aker Kvaerner chosen to build new platform
  • 2006 - Acergy S.A. Awarded Pipelay Contract for connection to Eldfisk
  • 2011 - Ekofisk South project launched
  • 2013 - Wellhead platform delivered
  • 2022 - Equinor sold its stake to Sval Energi

Geology

  • Ekofisk is a chalk field. Chalk is porous and can contain a lot of oil and gas, but the flow rates are low.
  • Ekofisk was originally developed by pressure depletion and had an expected recovery factor of 17 per cent. Since then, limited gas injection and comprehensive water injection have contributed to a substantial increase in oil recovery.
  • Water injection started up in a part of the field in 1987, and has been so successful that it has led to numerous expansions.
  • Without water injection, less than 20 per cent of the oil in Ekofisk would have been produced.
  • With the current plans, the operator expects to recover more than half the oil originally in the reservoir.
