+++ Description

  • Jonah Field is known for being one of the largest on-shore natural gas discoveries in the USA in the early 1990s
  • According to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the productive area encompasses 30,500 acres.
  • The life of the Jonah Field is estimated to be from 40 to 60 years

+++ History

  • 1977 - Jonah Gas And Condensate Field discovered
  • 1993 - Field potential proved after McMurry Oil Company drilled Jonah-Federal #1-5 well
  • 1996 - Amoco acquired 50 percent of SOCO's interest in the Jonah field
  • 2012 - Linn Energy acquired the field from BP
  • 2014 - Encana sells its stake to TPG Capital

+++ Geology

  • Jonah field is a giant gas field producing from extremely low-porosity and low-permeability sandstones.
  • Within the upper 2500 ft (760 m) of the Lance Formation, which includes the entire productive interval in nearly all wells, the average well has 1000 ft (30 m) of net sandstone, having an average porosity of 6.4%.
  • The average permeability of all sandstones, estimated from core data-derived equations, is an astonishingly low 6 Ad. The average water saturation of all sandstones is 45%.
