Brief Description

  • In operation since 1953, the Trans Mountain pipeline system (TMPL) is the only pipeline system in North America that transports both crude oil and refined products to the west coast.
  • TMPL moves product from Edmonton, Alberta, to marketing terminals and refineries in the central British Columbia region, the Greater Vancouver area and the Puget Sound area in Washington state, as well as to other markets such as California, the U.S. Gulf Coast and overseas through the Westridge marine terminal located in Burnaby, British Columbia.
  • It also supplies the Burnaby Refinery
  • Only crude oil and condensates are shipped into the United States, where it supplies Cherry Point Refinery, Ferndale Refinery, Shell Anacortes Refinery and Marathon Anacortes Refinery as well as export terminals

Pipeline Status

  • In 2008, the capacity of the pipeline was increased following completion of the TMX - Anchor Loop Project which consists of a pipeline loop and other facilities

History

  • 1953 - The pipeline is commissioned
  • 2006 - National Energy Board approves TMX - Anchor Loop Application
  • 2008 - Capacity is increased from 260,000 to 300,000 bpd with the completion of the Anchor Loop Project
  • 2012 - Edmonton Terminal expansion announced
