Training alongside [/sport/cristianoronaldo/index.html Cristiano Ronaldo], Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Ruud van Nistelrooy and [/sport/wayne_rooney/index.html Wayne Rooney] every day is bound to teach you a few things as a young player.
This was the privilege former [/sport/teampages/manchester-united.html Manchester United] player David Jones experienced between the ages of 18 and 21. 'It was a great place to start my career. I got a fantastic insight into what makes a top player,' he told Sportsmail.
'At the time, Manchester United were without doubt the biggest club in the world and every player wanted to play for them and for Sir Alex Ferguson. I was 19 and had been training with the first team for about six months when the club offered me a new contract.

'I didn't have an agent back then and this is when Roy Keane and http://www.controlwiki.tech/wiki/User:RubenPalazzi2 Gary Neville pulled me aside after training one day and offered to help with the contract. They were both fantastic. We sat down in the players' lounge and they went through everything with me. Even that was an experience to learn from!
'They wanted to make sure I was getting a fair deal for where I was at in my career and it was actually Roy and Gary who negotiated the contract with the manager on my behalf.'
With those two players fighting his corner, Jones was offered an improved deal and signed a few days later. 'After I'd signed I bought them both a bottle of wine as a thank you... the cheapest commission I've ever had to pay in my whole career!'

Jones remembers how many of the senior squad members had a big influence on the young players at the club.
'You had Rio Ferdinand, Nicky Butt, Quinton Fortune and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who were all top class international players, but they still had a lot of time for the youngsters coming through.
'One of the reasons the club was so successful at the time was because of the culture that was created by the senior players and manager. There were so many big characters and personalities in the squad whose standards were so high on and off the pitch.'
This exceptionally high level of performance and application was expected by every young player aspiring to play for Manchester United, according to Jones.
'It was about delivering consistently high performances in every training session. You had to be on top of your game each day and as a young player if you were seen to dilute the level of training in any way, then the next day you would be back with the reserves.'

Jones credits the club's success to the culture created by senior players and Sir Alex Ferguson
Jones made a handful of first team appearances at United under Ferguson but came to the decision at the age of 21 he needed to move to achieve his ambition of playing regularly in the Premier League.
'It was a difficult decision, there was Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in the squad at the time and also Kleberson who was a World Cup winner.
'I'd played some games for the first team in the cup competitions and had been on the bench a few times in the Premier League and Champions League but I realised if I wanted to play week in week out I needed to move on.'
Since leaving United, Jones has played over 100 times in the Premier League and has achieved four promotions from the Championship with Wolves, Derby and Burnley twice. He has also played for Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday.

Jones believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will bring success back to Old Trafford
Now at the age of 35, he still has ties with United having worked at times with their media department this season and believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will bring success back to Old Trafford.
'While I've been looking for a new club I've been back at United doing some media work and it's clear that Ole is building a similar foundation to Sir Alex,' he added.
'The discipline, dedication and attention to detail that Ole had as a player appears to be evident at the club now. He is also bringing in world class signings and developing young players from the academy and the feel good factor seems to be back at United.'
